Gamma - ray bursts as X - ray depth - gauges of the Universe
نویسنده
چکیده
We discuss the X-ray flux of gamma-ray burst afterglows at redshifts in the range 3-30, including the effects of the intergalactic He II absorption. We point out that strong X-ray lines may form locally in burst afterglows starting minutes after the trigger. This can provide distinctive X-ray distance indicators out to the redshifts where the first generation of massive stars form.

Detecting gamma-ray bursts from M31 with the wide field X-ray cameras on board BeppoSAX
Gamma-ray bursters emit a small fraction of their flux in X rays, and because X-ray detectors are often very sensitive they may probe the gamma-ray burst universe more deeply than the current best gamma-ray instruments. On the reasonable assumptions that spectra of bursts observed by BATSE may be used to predict the X-ray fluxes of gamma-ray bursts, and that any corona of bursts around M31 is s...
متن کاملProbing the Warm Inter-galactic Medium through Absorption against Gamma Ray Bursts X-ray Afterglows
Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) afterglows close to their peak intensity are among the brightest X-ray sources in the sky. Despite their fast power-law like decay, when fluxes are integrated from minutes up to hours after the GRB event, the corresponding number counts (logN-logF relation) far exceeds that of any other high redshift (z> 0.5) source, the flux of which is integrated over the same time inter...
متن کاملGamma-Ray Bursts and Topology of the Universe
In this letter we propose a physical explanation for recently reported correlations between pairs of close and antipodal gamma-ray bursts from publicly available BATSE catalogue. Our model is based on the cosmological scenario in which bursters are located at cosmological distances of order of 0.5–2 Gpc. Observed distribution of gamma-ray bursts strongly suports this assumption. If so gamma-ray...
متن کاملA High Resolution Intergalactic Explorer for the Soft X-ray/FUV
We present a mission concept for high resolution X-ray spectroscopy with a resolving power, R ∼6000, (c.f. R ∼ 1000 for Chandra, XMM-Newton). This resolution is physics-driven, since it allows the thermal widths of coronal X-ray lines to be measured, and astrophysics-driven, since 50 km s resolves internal galaxy motions, and galaxy motions within larger structures. Such a mission could be smal...
متن کاملHigh Column Densities and Low Extinctions of Gamma-ray Bursts: Evidence for Hypernovae and Dust Destruction
We analyze a complete sample of g-ray burst afterglows and find X-ray evidence for high column densities of gas around them. The column densities are in the range 10–10 cm, which is right around the average column density of Galactic giant molecular clouds. We also estimate the cloud sizes to be 10–30 pc, implying masses *10 . This strongly suggests that g-ray bursts lie within star-forming reg...
